Overcoming Entrepreneurial Overwhelm!

Overcoming Entrepreneurial Overwhelm!

Overcoming Entrepreneurial Overwhelm!

“There are very few certainties that touch us all in this mortal experience, but one of the absolutes is that we will experience hardship and stress at some point.”
—James Dobson

…BUT why does this stress have to be so exacerbated during the holidays?

I love this time of year! Not only is everything beautifully decorated and oh-so romantic with lights, music, and the smells of the holiday season; it is also a time to look back on the year and evaluate successes and challenges and to look at accomplished goals and places where I fell short of my dreams.

During that self-evaluation process, I am sure not to judge myself too harshly—after all, life does happen, and even with my best intentions things just don’t always come together as planned. Fortunately for us, the Lord directs our steps.

Proverbs 16:9 states, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

God’s answer is the real power that shapes events and enables me to give the right answer and take the right steps.

overcome entrepreneurial overwhelm

Reflection

Another part of my evaluation process involves looking at how I felt while accomplishing my goals. This might not seem relevant, but being frustrated, overwhelmed, or disorganized while trying to make things happen can actually keep them from happening!

One of the reasons I like looking at my goals around Christmas and New Year’s is because this is one of the busiest times of year. Having a lot to do in a little bit of time and the stresses that surround the season may lead to a renewal of those feelings that kept me from achieving my goals. So, when I start to feel that oh-so-familiar overwhelm and frustration, I can focus on solutions for my next set of goals.

When I look at my goals and the never-ending to-do list, I will do a few things differently this time to help soothe that sense of “oh-my-how-will-I-ever-get-this-done” panic. Let’s work on these together this season!

Get Organized

Find something that works for you, and stick to it. It doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated. Use a spreadsheet or an online project management tool. Basecamp works for me, but there are many others available. Just keep it simple. Your time-organizing project should not take more time to construct than it takes to complete the items on your to-do list (talking to myself, here!).

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

This is one of the most underrated and under-observed skills. Create a quarter or a year’s worth of goals and put a realistic timeline on them. You can’t make your life and business dreams come true by wishing. There has to be a concrete plan. Part of that plan includes putting firm deadlines on your goals. Making those timelines and each action step concrete will be a huge help in limiting overwhelm while achieving your goals. After all, it is often procrastination that makes us feel pressure to complete things, which leads to stress, overwhelm, and frustration.

…or…

Work Through & Celebrate Your POWER-HOUR!

Blocking off 15, 30, 45 minutes or an hour to focus on one specific task has worked well for me. Set a time, power through the hour, and see how much you can accomplish!  Celebrate what you have achieved rather than mourning over what you didn’t compete.

Hire Help

While it might seem weird to hire help during the holidays, it will help you keep up continuity in your business while you attend to all your holiday festivities. The absolute best way to achieve your goals is to get help. You can’t do it all by yourself. You need someone who can help shoulder the workload. You can outsource small stuff like research or reports. You can hire experts to manage your social media. You can contract with a freelance writer to keep up your blog posts and other writing. You can hire a virtual assistant to help with almost anything (thank you, Courtenay!). For busy moms, I suggest a housekeeper. You’d be surprised what a load that takes off (thanks, Lorena!).

Take some time to think about how you feel during this busy time of year and how those same feelings may carry over into other projects later in the year. Now, as you write your goals for the year, add in solutions for overcoming those difficult spots. Solutions may include:

  • Taking a weekend retreat to pray, plan, and write your goals.
  • Hiring help in the form of a VA, freelance writer, social media expert, or housekeeper.
  • Setting realistic timelines on your goals, especially if you are working with a team.
  • Planning on days off when you unplug and focus on things that are not your business.

Comment below with solutions you will write into your goals this next year to help you avoid overwhelm at the holidays and all year long! The Lord’s certain purpose and His answers will stand in spite of and in the midst of my plans. Don’t wait until you feel you are at the end of your rope!

Navigating the Back Roads of Life

Navigating the Back Roads of Life

Navigating the Back Roads of Life

Do you need a guide for Navigating the Back Roads of Life?

Over the last month, our family has spent a lot of time driving from our home which is about an hour north of Dallas to my mother-in-love’s home in San Antonio. Now when you look at a map this is a pretty straight shot via Highway 75 and Highway 35; that’s it! Barring any terrible traffic mishaps it should take about 5 hours.  Taking the “back roads” supposedly adds about 45-minutes to the jaunt! Supposedly!

I have always been amazed at my husband Fred and my sister Anita’s ability to navigate the back roads of Texas to reach their destinations. I, on the other hand, have no sense of direction whatsoever and would be hard-pressed to tell you whether I was facing north or east or south or west at any given time.

I am also GPS – Gullible, (im)Patient, & yet Suspicious – of computerized map systems!

We spent precious hours visiting Mama Jo, helping take care of her, doing odd jobs for family members, reminiscing, and making sure her last days were as comfortable as possible. We celebrated the end of her life over a period of months and weeks, and then we celebrated fully the beginning of her life with the Lord on this first Sunday in July. On our way home I followed Fred, but engaged my MapQuest GPS just in case I lost sight of him on those “back roads”.

Do you talk back to your GPS “voice”?  For an hour out of San Antonio the MapQuest computer voice asked me to make a U-turn every 2 miles:

“Make a U-turn at Main Street;

make a U-turn at Frontage Road;

make a U-turn at Bob’s Road…”

I’m by myself in the car saying, “What?”  “A U-turn?”  “Am I lost?”  Five hours later as we went through the remote city of Cleburne, my MapQuest voice asked me to make right and left and U-turns for at least 30 minutes before “she” finally gave up and began to reroute me on Highway 51. Obscure Highway 51.

Can you relate to these frustrations?  Please tell me I am not alone!

I felt sure that at any given moment this little voice was going to start screaming and screeching at me,

“Have you lost your mind?
Are you purposefully trying to become lost?
How am I supposed to get you home when you won’t listen to the directions I am giving you?”

Now, I feel like screaming at the “voice” who won’t respond unless it is to tell me make another U-turn or at Fred in the car in front of me.  After all he is the one who got us into this back road debacle!

Christ says,

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” – Matthew 7:13-14 (ESV)

In spite of ourselves and our purposeful attempts to navigate our own paths, God offers us clear navigation; there is only one way to spend eternity with Him and that is through belief in His Son Jesus Christ – in His life, in His death on the cross, and in His resurrection and preparation of a place for us.

“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in.  Aim at earth and you will get neither.” – C.S. Lewis

Mama Jo knew this straight and narrow path well and nephew Joseph communicated this course clearly in her celebration services. She desired to go home and knew that she had chosen the right way; the one navigable path. And yet even though she desired and requested that her suffering be short and that the pain be limited, she lingered for some time in discomfort. Her loved ones encouraged her with songs, Scripture readings, by spending time with her and assuring her that the day would surely come when she would be wrapped in the arms of Jesus. The path of suffering was less clear cut. And all we could do was encourage her to live through this journey in a way that brought God glory and honor. And this she did.

I am grateful for the way Mama Jo embraced my family and folded us into her own.  I am grateful for her unwavering faith and enduring patience and her testimony to the Lord that showed us the non-negotiable Way.

I am slowly learning that God has a purpose for the back road experiences of my life and that He is there – The Sufficient Navigator on a path of inspiration and insight that brings Him Glory and Honor.

May God give us strength for this life’s journey through the end.  May He make us to see the straight path He has set before us.

Seek Inspiration and Insight!

Blessings,

Karen Lindwall-Bourg

Basics of Becoming a Writer

Basics of Becoming a Writer

Basics of Becoming a Writer

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two elements that I’m aware of, no shortcut.”

― S. King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

You have started your business and have the all-too-real awareness that you are now required to write. At a minimum, you probably need to write your business bio. If you are creating a website, you will have a lot more to write, or you will have to hire someone to do it for you. But, before you do that, consider these basics of becoming a writer.

All of us have the ability to write. My first piece of advice is to stop freaking out about writing. If you can talk – you can write. At first, it may need some editing, but if you can string your ideas together and tell someone about yourself or your business, you can write. Here are practical approaches to getting started, composing, and improving your writing.

Getting started.

Many professional writers will tell you the hardest part is getting started. For some, it is the blank page; for others, it is the act of putting yourself in front of the screen and actually typing. Procrastination is one of the most common reasons for not finishing your writing. So to get started, follow these tips.

Brainstorm to get going.

I love to brainstorm everything. I will do it for everything from business strategy to meal planning. Brainstorming is way to get all the ideas out of your head and onto a piece of paper or on the screen. Don’t hold back when you brainstorm. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. It doesn’t matter if it sounds like the worst idea on the planet it gets spit out of your head and onto the page. Don’t judge anything while you brainstorm. This is counterproductive and will freeze you up.

You can set a timer for a set period while you have a personal brainstorm session. You can also work with another person or a group of people. No matter who you work with, same rules apply. Everything gets written down—nothing gets judged as useless, stupid, or off topic.

Once time is up, then review your ideas. Determine which ones you will keep, which ones are irrelevant, and which ones should be revisited later. This is also a great way to always have ideas so if writer’s block sneaks up on you there is fodder for content.

Look for inspiration.

This can be tricky. All of us have done it. We think I will just go on Facebook or Pinterest for a second. I just need to clear my head or get a little inspiration. Then we get sucked in and three hours later nothing is done. We are frustrated and we still haven’t started our writing. I have definitely been there—it is my go-to procrastination technique. (Shhh…don’t tell).

There is something to be said for seeking inspiration when you are getting started. Setting limits to seeking inspiration is a great way to make sure you stay on track and get started. Get out your handy-dandy timer and put a limit on your search. When I go looking to be inspired, I have some go-to sites. I love looking up quotes and scripture.

Another way I get inspired is to get away from the gadgets. Go outside. Take a walk. Stare at the trees. Take off your shoes and walk in the grass. Observe the nature around you. Meditate on the wonder and miracles of God in your surroundings.

Start with pen and paper.

As old fashioned as it sounds, there is something that happens in your brain when you put pencil to paper. There are times when I want to use the computer to write. I use the computer when I know exactly what I want to write and it’s all mapped out in my head. I also use the computer when I am writing for business.

However, my prayer journal is all pen and paper. Things I write for myself are often on pen and paper. Some of my best writing starts out in my journal or as a personal struggle I am working through. This is a way to slow down, connect with your ideas and your words. It is also a great way to connect with God and the Holy Spirit. It gives you the opportunity to listen as your write.

Start simple with your writing.

Don’t go for perfection. Don’t go for a Pulitzer prize winning piece of literature. Just start simple. Start with short simple sentences. They will create short simple paragraphs. Simple is the best way to get your ideas out of your head and onto paper.

When you are getting started with writing, you want to aim for finished. Unedited, error-ridden, spelling-goofs, punctuation-omissions, forgotten-caps rough draft. A rough draft is a finished draft. You can’t get close to finishing until you get a rough draft.

[Leadership] Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE!

[Leadership] Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE!

Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE!

If strong leadership leads to LIFE and GROWTH, then lack of strong leadership leads to death and stagnation. Are you a strong leader who contributes to and enhances life? Have you surrounded yourself with strong leaders who contribute to and enhance life? How do you do that?

Strong Leadership Leads to Life

Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE, not death!

In his Leadership Bible, John Maxwell quotes Church expert and statistician George Barna who asserts that “…the American church is dying due to lack of strong leadership… Nothing is more important than leadership.“ That’s a sobering thought! And I started wondering if it doesn’t also apply to the death and stagnation of other ministries, our ministries, and our businesses as entrepreneurs. If I’m honest, I can admit to you that one of my biggest fears is that I will remain stuck, or stagnant, and may not make a difference in the lives of other entrepreneurs as I grow in my entrepreneurial endeavors! It’s why I do what I do as the president of Karen Bourg Companies (http://karenbourg.com ), the {Inter} National Association of Christian Women Entrepreneurs, and the International Christian Mompreneur Network (http://nacwe.org ).

Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE – a Life with Passion!

I looked up LIFE in the thesaurus and found the following words – verve, vivacity, animation, energy, excitement, soul, kick, get-up-and-go, sparkle! I LOVE these words! I would also add GROWTH and PLUCK! These words add life and spark to my heart! They encourage me to live a life of passion as one being led, and as a leader.

I want to follow God‘s vision with passion! So do you! I want to follow the desires and passions that God has given me and His vision in the following areas:

B.E.L.I.E.F.S.:

B stands for Body:

E is for Emotion:

L is for Livelihood:

I is for Intellect:

E is for Environment:

F is for Family and Friends:

S is for Spiritual:

Take a moment to decide how you want to grow and follow the desires and passions that God has given you in these areas. What did you come up with? Share them with us here.

BELIEFS

Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE and productivity, not stagnation!

In all of my programs and masterminds throughout the year, and of course, in my individual coaching experiences, I focus on growth. I want to put God first in my life in every area or dimension of wellness. I want to serve others well as he Has called me. I want to hear Him say, “well done, good and faithful servant!” And it’s not selfish to understand that I need to attend to my own personal growth and take care of myself or I won’t be able to take care of or lead others. How do you do that?

  • Pray that God will build a hedge of protection around you and around those who lead you and around those whom you lead.
  • Ask Him to continually pour into your life so that you grow to be the leader He has called you to be.
  • Be intentional about growth as an individual and as a leader of others.
  • Put it on your calendar! Hmmm… Have you heard me say this before?!
  • Appoint strategic blocks of time in your day and in your week where you focus on growing in the Lord, growing as an entrepreneur, and growing as a leader.
  • Surround yourself with people who lead by God’s design.

Lord,

I pray for every entrepreneur/minister who will read these words, that they will be encouraged to make plans and allow You to establish their steps, that they will strive to be leaders who speak of You and Your Word and whose lives manifest Your presence and Your power as they imitate the faith of those who have gone before us. May we grow as leaders who set an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. Keep us growing, GROWing, GROWING-unstuck, not stagnant!

AMEN!

The verses referred to in this prayer are Proverbs 16:9, Hebrews 13:7, and first Timothy 4:12 and were referred to in the first blog on leadership. Link to this blog here and link to it at the bottom of this second blog after the signature.

Strong Leadership Leads to LIFE, and Life  Means Growth!

As a NACWE group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/NACWEFreedom/ ), we spent 3 months learning to GROW as individuals and entrepreneurs and to TELL others about our offers (NACWE Classroom April, May, June 2019). SO MUCH FUN!

We learned that:

  • growth doesn’t just happen-you have to be intentional about it,
  • you have to know and be aware of who you are before you will experience significant growth,
  • you must see value in yourself and add value to yourself before you can add value to others,
  • it’s important to pause and reflect along the way and allow growth to catch up with you,
  • motivation gets you going and discipline keeps you growing,
  • it’s your responsibility to create an environment within which growth thrives,
  • you have to develop strategies to maximize growth,
  • bad experiences, when managed well, can lead to great growth,
  • your character growth determines the height of your personal growth,
  • growth stops when you lose the tension between where you are and where you could be,
  • you have to trade off some things to be able to receive things that help you grow,
  • growth is stimulated by asking why,
  • you have to find examples to follow because it’s hard to improve when you have no one but yourself to follow,
  • growth always expands your capacity, and
  • growing yourself enables you to grow others!

Learning Leadership from the Lord is Crucial

Are you a leader?

You are a leader! You are leading someone by God’s design!

Maybe we could say, “You are never NOT leading!”

Now, where do you go to learn about leadership?

I want my leadership to be established by the Lord, don’t you!

So, let’s go to The LEADER together!

Learning Leadership from the Lord has been a wonderful journey for me!

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God.

Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.

Hebrews 13:7

Leadership from the Lord

As an entrepreneur for the last 25 years, I’ve spent a lot of time searching out people from whom to learn leadership skills.

  • The John Maxwell Team-most recently! This is one of the greatest steps I’ve taken! Wish I hadn’t waited till now!
  • The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur group (also recently)!
  • Dozens of awesome coaches and mentors and great examples, who “… …set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12, and
  • The PACKED classroom vault of my own organization – The {Inter} National Association of Christian Women Entrepreneurs [NACWE.org]/Mompreneurs

The list is long!

Learning Leadership from the Lord and Paul the Apostle

Most recently I decided that I would like to read through all the books of the Bible written by Paul chronologically!

I decided to read through those books of the Bible in John Maxwell‘s Leadership Bible!

I’ll be sharing things I learn as I grow because that’s what I do! I hope you do too!

Share what the Lord is teaching you with those you love and lead!

Learning Leadership from the Lord, the LEADER!

Do you go to the Bible for leadership lessons? It’s considered the greatest book ever written and John Maxwell believes it is the greatest book on leadership ever written! The Lord, our Leader, has been teaching us about leadership for thousands of years. Have we been listening?

Leadership from the Lord

Learning Leadership from the Lord

Will I ever learn? The best source, the greatest tool for life and livelihood is the Bible! If I will seek Him, He will change my life and the course of my development as a leader. Out of it, I can draw leadership principles that have been woven into it by God who Leads us! I’ll look at other sources, and I’ll listen to those He has placed in my life, but I desire to focus on Him First!

Learning Leadership from the Lord Together

Join me in taking these steps to being a godly leader:

  • Dive into God‘s Word every day.
  • Put it on your calendar! If I don’t block the time off for the most important time – time spent being quiet, in prayer, and seeking the Lord, the time that I have blocked off for other tasks is in vain!
  • Take an extra step and journal through what He is teaching you as you spend time with Him.
  • Along the way, ask Him to use this time to grow you to be a more godly leader of others.
  • Ask Him to place people in your life who will lead you with wisdom.
  • Share what you are learning with others! Share this article on social media, please!

Learning Leadership from the Lord – LEAD ON!

Use your Leadership gifts or ‘giftedness’ wisely:

Gifts of Grace – Romans 12

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
