Taking Captive Random Thoughts

by Lee Desmond

(during the Coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic of 2020)

“…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:5

  • “Social distancing,” “Self-isolating,” Shelter in place”: definitely terms from Year-of-Our-Lord 2020.

  • Fear…about Covid-19, our kids, life in general…so many people live in fear, or at least, fear so many aspects of life. But as Christians, we are told in scripture to Fear Not. In fact, it’s in the Bible 366 times…

  • So many people I know don’t trust the media, including me. Now suddenly everyone trusts the media. ??

  • What do I think about the President?

  • Still thinking about our move from CO back to east TX…

  • I think about my mother-in-law whenever I make coleslaw. It was her recipe, my family loves it, and it’s definitely a favorite of ours—–as she was. I miss her.

  • I wonder what my mom was thinking those last days before she died. Sometimes I feel guilty that I didn’t do more for her during that time.

  • I miss our church in Colorado.

  • One thing about living in the Denver area…there were so many ways to ‘wash the feet of our city.” Can I do that here?

  • The older I get, the more I realize just how little I know about most anything. And I see how much I still have to learn.

  • And it drives me CRAZY when my kids seem to think they know everything about human nature and life. OMG!

  • What would life look like if we hadn’t moved away from Mississippi so long ago?

  • What would life look like if my Dad hadn’t died so suddenly when I was in high school?

  • Do I really trust God to guide and direct my life, and do I trust Him during the really tough times? I think I do?

  • I love this quote by CS Lewis: “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.”

  • The Colorado Community Church choir was a good experience for me and checked off a bucket list item (or as close as it’ll ever be, I’m sure).

  • My friends don’t believe I’m an introvert.

  • During this downtime, I want to make calls to friends, write letters, write MORE! Just DO IT!

  • Should I feed my dog raw food?

  • Should I respond to the Facebook post that upset me today?

  • I really like the little Episcopal church we’ve been attending.

  • How much commitment do I want to have with old pals from when we lived in this area before?

  • What’s next?

  • One day at a time…

These are very random thoughts that go through my brain, sometimes daily. And there are others…always others. What to do with all of this?!

I think about some of these often, forget some of them, let some go completely. Maybe I can write about some of them…

Taking Captive Random Thoughts – God will guide you with Truth

Taking your thoughts captive

What does it mean to “take every thought captive”? Here’s the whole verse:

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up

against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought

to make it obedient to Christ. (NIV)

To take your thoughts captive means to take control over what you think and know that God will guide you with Truth.

  • Understand that you can control your thoughts and take responsibility for them. It may not be easy, but scripture commands you to set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2). That means it must be possible for you to choose to take your thoughts captive.

  • Think before writing (reacting)—and pray about your thoughts. We often have situations that demand a quick response. But I’ve learned that a knee-jerk reaction often makes whatever the problem is, worse, and then I have to back up and start over with a solution. It’s the same with our writing, whether it be in letters or emails, a book, or social media. If we wait, pray about our words, think about the challenge in a positive light (What can I learn from this situation? What can I do differently if presented with something similar again? How can I transfer my thoughts to paper in a way that blesses others?), then we are beginning to take control and put those thoughts under obedience.

  • Philippians 4:8 says to think about “whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy”; but if we choose to set our thoughts and minds on the opposites, then we set ourselves up with “arguments and pretensions against the knowledge of God.” We are told to demolish those thoughts!

Taking Captive Random Thoughts – Write Them Down

If you’re anxious or overwhelmed right now, I encourage you to write down your thoughts, pray about them, see where the Lord leads you. I know someone who, when she feels the stresses of life coming on, writes blessings to friends, family, co-workers, service providers—whomever comes to mind. You can do the same. You may not know how to write blessings about what food to give your dog (see list above) … but then again, there may be someone else out there who is thinking the same thing, and you may just have the answer!

Yes, it takes discipline and commitment to take our thoughts captive and bring them into obedience. It takes discipline and commitment to use your random thoughts to bless others. But God has given you everything for life and godliness through Christ, and He promises to guide you through His Spirit and give you peace. He will empower you to take those random thoughts captive—and as you practice, you will be able to train or retrain your thoughts. God will empower you to “think on these things.”

The Counter Perspective! New Perspectives!

The Counter Perspective! New Perspectives!

WHAT DO YOU DO TO SEE THINGS FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE? FOR YOURSELF? FOR YOUR BUSINESS OR MINISTRY?

My Inspiration to Seek New Perspectives and Have FUN Doing It!

A friend of mine posted a picture of herself with her kids sitting on their kitchen counter.

Megan: “There’s a couch. And we have a table. We are a strange little bunch. Apparently sitting on the counter is comforting.”

Karen: “(1) I haven’t sat on the counter in so long, I can’t remember! (2) There is no room to sit on the counter around here! (3) I resolve, in support of Team _____, to clean off and sit on the counter this week!”

Megan: “Brandon and I have had some of our biggest breakthroughs in our marriage while sitting on counters – something about sitting up there helps everyone open up!”

Karen: “(4) I will build an opening-up counter in our next counseling offices!”

Now, I just can’t stop thinking about sitting on the counter!

Do You Need New Perspectives on Life’s Problems and God’s Solutions?

Perspective very simply means: the way in which things are viewed; a way of regarding situations, facts, etc. and judging their relative importance; or one’s outlook, attitude, or way of looking at things; our frame of reference.

We very often need a different perspective in our lives, so we’ve sought the Lord and His Word for answers, we’ve asked trusted others to listen to our stories and to offer their advice, and we’ve tried on different choices to see how they “fit”!

The more we know about our Purpose and our Passion as we wear various hats in our families, with our friends, and in our communities, the better we will serve!

Do You Need a New Perspective in Your Business or Ministry?

We very often need a different perspective in our counseling offices, so we have switched seats in the counseling room, or counseled in a different office, at a table instead of from the couch, and with pipe cleaners or crayons or buttons or stones to inspire creative ways of looking at solutions to our problems. But never have I asked one of my clients to sit on the counter!

We often need a different perspective in our businesses and ministries, so we have hired business coaches, joined networking groups, listened to webinars, and read books (SO many books!)

The more we know about our Purpose and our Passion as we wear various hats in our entrepreneurial ventures, with our associates and vendors, and in our networking communities, the better we will work!

What Does the Bible Say About New Perspectives?

For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are My ways higher than your ways
and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55: 8-9 English Standard Version (ESV)

We had a Pastor once who quoted this verse and said that if it was true, we ought often to look at what we felt were solutions to our problems backwards or upside-down. He warned, “These new perspectives might actually be closer to God’s ways than our own!” It’s difficult and counter to being “me”, but especially when things are going well, I try to look at things backwards and upside-down!

In an article titled, What the Bible Can Teach Us about Perspective, Bro. Aaron Reisinger points out that we see a man who is blind, but Christ saw a man that needed salvation. The healed blind man saw men walking as trees, he had a blurred perspective (John 9:35-41).

  • In anger, Moses smote the rock and lost the opportunity to bring God’s people into their land.
  • In bitterness, Naomi changed her name to Mara (bitter) without turning to God on her journey of grief and mourning until God graciously provided for her and for her daughter-in-love Ruth.
  • In discouragement, Elijah wished his life was over, but God had just given him a great victory on Mount Carmel.
  • In disobedience, the prophet Balaam couldn’t see the error of his ways, so God spoke to him through a donkey!
  • Because of peer pressure, King Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, allowed his perspective to be blurred and lost the kingdom. We must be sure that those we allow to influence us are walking with the Lord and living according to His commands.
  • Because his perspective was blurred by prejudice, Jonah was unhappy that God extended mercy to the Ninevites forgetting his own sins and unworthiness of God’s grace until finally his obedience led to their repentance.
  • Due to stagnant Christianity, Eli’s eye “began to wax dim”, and he allowed the lamp of God to go out in the temple. 2nd Peter exhorts us “add to our faith” and grow in our Christian life on a daily basis so we will see the commands of God as a precious thing that requires our attention and devotion.
  • Under great stress, we allow stressful situations to determine the way we view God and our circumstances, and we believe we surely are not exactly where God wants us, forgetting how He delivered His people out of Egypt.  Moses told them, “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.”
  • In worldliness, Demas looked at a short-term solution and forsook Paul and Luke when he could have followed and learned from one of the greatest Christians who ever lived with long-term blessings and successes (Colossians)!

LET’S ASK GOD FOR HIS PERSPECTIVES ON OUR LIVES, ON OUR BUSINESSES, AND AS HIS SERVANTS!

HOW CAN I HELP YOU RECEIVE A NEW PERSPECTIVE THROUGH COACHING?

Blessings,

Karen Lindwall-Bourg

Business Growth Strategy with Established Steps

Business Growth Strategy with Established Steps

Are you growing your business using Established Steps?

As a business owner or entrepreneur it is so easy to work ALL the time. We eat, breathe and sleep our business. Your to-do list is the first thing you think of when you wake up. If you’re like me, you keep a notebook or your phone close to your bed for those things that pop in your head when you are trying to go to sleep or awakened in the middle of the night.

Your purpose in life is likely deeply integrated into your business. Your business is linked to what you hope to accomplish for yourself and for God. Your purpose gives you passion and drive to accomplish your goals. It’s such a fulfilling way to live life. But it’s also something we need to be careful about because our business can easily take an unhealthy priority in our life. So how do you keep things in check or with Established Steps, how do you keep your eyes on God and not let your business become an idol?

Your Purpose with Established Steps

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt on a journey which included amazing feats like parting the Red Sea. Can you image witnessing something like that – how would it boost your faith? But then two months later, it’s as if the Israelites lose their collective minds! Moses went up on the mountain to receive the 10 commandments and didn’t come back for a while. In the meantime, the Israelites build an idol and worship it. They even make sacrifices to it (see Exodus 32).

They became discouraged when they didn’t see things happening. They freaked out, felt lost and didn’t know what was going to happen next. So they took matters into their own hands rather than trusting in God’s love for them.

God has a purpose for you. When you aren’t sure of the exact next step or the right decision to make – trust God’s plan. Focus on the fact He loves you more than you can understand. You may not see things happening but God is working. He is making the way for you.

Learning a New Way to be with Established Steps

The Israelites had to learn to do things differently. They were rescued from slavery and captivity but they had been in the Egyptian culture so long it was familiar and even felt profitable to them. They understood and knew the practices of the Egyptians. Egypt was home. The Exodus was a miracle but it took them from the only home they knew.

They had to turn their trust toward God, Whom they could not see, from the idols of the Egyptians they could see. They had to learn to get out of their comfort zone. It was all new. They had to learn how much God loved them and how to love him back. The start of that difficult lesson was waiting on God’s plan to manifest, which began with Moses receiving the Ten Commandments.

When you make the choice to submit all of your business choices to God purpose with Established Steps, you must step out of your comfort zone. It is a new way of doing business – to rely on conversation with God to help you plan your business growth strategy.

God’s Way of Doing Things with Established Steps

God has an order for things. Look at how He organized the days when He created the world (read about that here). There are proper steps toward make things happen. When it comes to your business growth strategy, organize according to God’s plan and trust God’s plan for you. Sometimes it means waiting for the plan. Other times it means listening to what He is instructing and advising.

God doesn’t want us to do nothing. We have to step out in faith. When we set our hearts and intentions to follow God’s plan for us He will honor our intentions.

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”  Proverbs 16:9 ESV

Trusting the Process with Established Steps

Trust God has a plan for you – this is so hard. You have this general idea of what God wants for your lives. You even have a personal mission or vision for your future. But then what do you do today? Do you spend money on advertising here or there? What do you charge? Should you take this client?

This is when you must again trust the love of God and have faith in His Words; taking the time to remind yourself of God’s faithfulness and love toward you.

There have been times in my life when it’s as if I had a map light in my hand and I knew exactly where I was going and where I would end up. It was all very clear. In comparison to more recent times. I’ve been instructed to cross a rushing river via stepping stones but sometimes the only stone I see is the one I am standing on. I know exactly where I’m headed – I can see the shore. But the journey requires stepping on one stone and a time.

Not knowing what is next is part of the process. It builds faith. It requires me to wait and listen. Sometimes you stay in the same place because there is something you are meant to learn.

Knowing, really knowing God’s intense affection for you will bring you peace in the times when you must step out of your comfort zone and toward that unseen stepping stone! Understanding He is always faithful and will never abandon you is essential when you have to make big decisions or just don’t know which path to take.

WHAT NEXT STEPS AND BIG DECISIONS DO YOU NEED TO MAKE?

HOW CAN WE HELP YOU TAKE THOSE NEXT STEPS THROUGH COACHING?

Blessings,

Be amazed! Things That NEVER Cease to Amaze Me

Be amazed! Things That NEVER Cease to Amaze Me

Blogging with Jeff!

Jeff Amazed

Do you ever stop to write down the things that truly amaze you?

Be amazed!

Definition: astonished, astounded, shocked, stunned, startled, surprised, flabbergasted, dumbfounded, staggered, taken aback

Here’s our list:

(from Karen Lindwall-Bourg, LPC-S and son, Jeff Bourg, Cashier)

ON A NEGATIVE NOTE:

  • That anyone would build homes with plumbing on outside walls in areas that reach freezing temperatures.
  • The amount of trash accumulated in our household alone!
  • How impatient folks (I) can be over things that they have no control over and that seem not too crucial.
  • How technology has made people seem aloof or consumed or rude.
  • Ribbons of highways and congested traffickers – I always wonder, “Did God really intend this?”

Be amazed!

What amazes you negatively?

ON A POSITIVE NOTE:

  • Lighthouses, Waterfalls, & Sunsets.
  • The kindnesses (sometimes misdirected, but always heart-felt) of others when a loved one dies or is ill.
  • How small efforts make such a huge impact!
  • Smiles!
  • Puppy breath!
  • The miracle of birth & hugs of grandchildren – and when they finally call you by name! “Say, Nana!”
  • When my expectations are low and things turn out so much better.
  • Air flight! And Time-Zones (he’s amazed; I’m confused and discombobulated)!
  • The heart “swell” experienced during worshipful music!
  • God’s free gift of eternal life, for even one such as I!

Be amazed!

What amazes you positively?

By Grace Through Faith

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:2-10

Future Glory

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified.”

Romans 8:18-29

10 Ways to Love God More

10 Ways to Love God More

At this time of year you are constantly reminded of love. You plan romantic outings or long for them. Tips on showing love to your friends, spouses and kids are everywhere. There are tips on how to love your family, your clients and even your pets.  But how do you love God more?

Let’s talk first about loving God.

It’s easy to start feeling lonely and depressed with so much love in the air. February activities present an idealized love that is so much fun to watch in the movies and makes our heart go pitter pat. But, that type of feeling love can change from one moment to the next, from one commercial to the next. So let’s focus on a love that is not fleeting.

God’s Love!

Nothing can separate you from God’s love.

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:38-39

This verse boils down to this: nothing you can say, nothing you can do or have done can keep God from loving you.

Nothing can keep God from loving you. He loves you without you doing anything right. He loves you in your darkest moments. He loves you when you don’t think you deserve it. NO thing you can name will keep God from loving you.

Once you accept Him, God does not require you to do anything to receive His unconditional love. So this month, along with loving others in your life why not try a few things on this list to love God. Practicing some of these suggestions will create a stronger intimacy with God and improve your mood.

There are many ways to love God.

Try these tips alone or with your family as part of your Valentine’s Day celebrations.

LOVE GOD THROUGH PRAISE & WORSHIP

  • Sing along with praise and worship music.
  • Listen to beautiful, worshipful music while thinking about the love of God.
  • Create as a way to celebrate God’s love. You can paint, craft, knit or sew.
  • Dance to worship Him.

LOVE GOD THROUGH MEDITATION

  • Be still – eliminate all distractions, and focus on the blessings in your life.
  • Go outside and purposefully take in the beauty of nature.
  • Pick a meaningful verse, memorize and rehearse then share it.

LOVE GOD THROUGH GRATITUDE

  • Free yourself of distractions then make a list thanking God for the important people in your life. Detailed why they are important to you.
  • Take 10 minutes each morning to thank God for everything He’s done in the last week to show you love and blessing.
  • Use these lists and express gratitude to those people in your life through notes or actions they will appreciate.

This is a short list of personal things you can do to express your love to God. Of course, you can do any of the activities on this list with others or for others in order to show love because loving others is loving God. The more time you spend loving God, the easier it will be to love others.

How do you show that you love God?

Let’s learn to love God first, then others as ourselves this month!

Blessings,

Karen Lindwall-Bourg
