WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

Karen is a business coach “excellente!” Her experience and personal knowledge of business and use of social media to create success is only surpassed by her listening skills. She listens because she cares more about my business (or your business) than any desire to promote her knowledge or her business. With Karen, it’s clear that your business goals are first, foremost, primary, the center of her attention. Most so-called coaches have an agenda of their own, not so with Karen. She listens because she cares, and she leads through humility. But make no mistake. She sets high goals for you and not only expects you to reach them, she encourages you along the way. She is ‘hard’ in that sense, but simply expects us to mirror the excellence in our work that she demonstrates in her own. We began our FaceBook presence under Karen’s tutelage and 24 hours later were advised by a $6B company that it would be the model for all future FaceBook endeavors! To truly educate is not to simply inform, but to draw proper understandings and applications of that information out of the other person. In that sense Karen has a unique and special gift of educating. Whatever your endeavor, you will be hard-pressed to find a business coach of higher integrity and skill. Karen, you ‘rock’!

KAREN’S TESTIMONY:

MY VALUE PROPOSITION BUSINESS CANVAS TESTIMONY:

I’ve been involved in handfuls of strategic plans for nonprofit organizations and handfuls of business plans for churches and for-profit organizations, but no one had ever challenged me to build a value proposition business canvas.
I was at a retreat with my business coach led by her business coach and we were challenged to walk through nine steps-I have added three to make it 12-toward a business  model canvas.
I was pretty new at building a business and didn’t really understand everything they were talking about, but I took it home and gave it a shot – whining, pouting, griping – the whole way!  I grabbed my counselor hat, I chose as an “ideal client” as a couple who really wanted help communicating; and I dove in with both feet. It wasn’t perfect and the process probably created more questions than answers for me at that phase of my business growth. But what it lead to was clarity and conviction and content that  tremendously influenced the next three years of my growth as an entrepreneur.  At the beginning I actually thought I would write a book about communication and I have an outline for that book prepared. I thought these new ideas would lead to a  marketable mini series of webinars and workbooks; that hasn’t happened! But this new focus actually inspired me to choose an element of communication for my PhD Dissertation, got me back on track after two starts and stops, and has led to one of the most fascinating academic studies in my life! Let’s create one together!

MY BUSINESS PLANNING TESTIMONY:

In spite of the fact that I appreciate a well-developed yearly business plan and being able to hold accountable those organizations to which I belong – my church, the organizations on who’s Boards I serve, and more, I have truthfully personally fulfilled the role and reaped the many unwelcome benefits of “founder flounder”.  I’m not good with numbers. I’m terrible at pushing papers around. I’d really rather just sit across from a client and encourage them to fulfill their God-given goals and dreams! But as an entrepreneur who owns three businesses, I don’t have the luxury any longer of continuing to flop back-and-forth without a plan, without a budget, without accountability.  So I hired a bookkeeper for a few hours who set me up with a better filing system and a simple QuickBooks program. I hired a financial coach who is helping me understand God’s plan for money and possessions and eternity in a way I never have before and who has given me the structural forms I need to evaluate where I have been, where I am now, and where I will strive to be in the future in these three companies! I won’t move forward anymore without these plans! Let’s create one together!

MY STRATEGIC PLAN TESTIMONY:

When my husband died we were in our mid 30’s and our children were seven, six, and four years old. He fought three different cancers over a period of four years and I thought the battle was over, but part of the battle – that of grieving and morning and healing and reconciling – had just begun. I took my children to a grief support group in our community knowing that they would help me to help them through this journey even while I traveled my own paths of bereavement.   A few years later I married Fred and his three children helped us blend this family of eight together while still on this journey of grief and mourning. That has been over 20 years ago and somehow in all of those years, six of the eight of us have either volunteered or been employed by grief support organizations across the years to this very day.

I was invited as a volunteer in the early years to participate in the development of the first strategic plan of one of these grief support centers. They gathered together on a Saturday with snacks and a coach and invited volunteers, current and past clients, staff members, Board of Director members, Advisory Council members and others to brainstorm through this entire process. We sat at big round tables in mixed groups and pooled our resources and our thoughts and dreams for this organization as the coach led us through each step of developing a five-year strategic plan. It was one of the most fascinating processes I’ve ever been involved in!

About a year later this organization decided to add a full-time paid program director to their staff which up until that time had included the full-time executive director and a part-time office administrator. As a new counselor I was chosen for that position! To this day I still confidently say that executive director was the best boss I’ve ever worked for. My family and I showed up and I was given an office. We rearranged it to my liking and the executive director set me up with a computer and an email address. The first thing I did was ask her for a copy of that strategic plan! I printed it out. I thumb-tacked it to the wall. And for the next four years of my work there I consulted that strategic plan whenever I had a major decision to make about the growth of the program. It became my “program director bible!” If I found myself spending a lot of time on a project and it wasn’t part of that five-year strategic plan, I always talked to the executive director about it and retraced my steps and re-organized my work. I probably saved myself a lot of time and tons of headaches, and hopefully saved the company (which largely depends on donations from citizens) a ton of money! A strategically placed strategic plan is invaluable! Let’s create one together!

BUILD YOUR HOUSE ON THE ROCK

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Matthew 7:24-27
